Service Description

This is a 4 week course for beginning music composition students. This course will guide students through the basic principles of recognizing and composing a good single line melody. LESSON 1: Melodic Contour LESSON 2: Relative Importance of Notes LESSON 3: Harmonic Implications LESSON 4: Range and Other Considerations Classes are small to ensure individual attention to each student. Each hour long class is divided into 2 parts plus a weekly composing assignment and an assessment. PART 1 The instructor leads students in guided analysis of one of the principles of good single line melody writing. Melodies from a variety of sources are analyzed and discussed. PART 2 The instructor leads students in a guided composing exercise, implementing the principle analyzed and discussed in part 1 of the lesson. ASSIGNMENT During the week following the lesson, students compose 5 different melodies that implement the principle analyzed and discussed in part 1 of the lesson. Students email their melodies to the instructor. ASSESSMENT At the beginning of the next lesson, before being introduced to the next principle of good single line melody writing, the instructor offers individualized guidance for each student.
